Where to stay in Moalboal

Choosing a base in Moalboal is mostly about one question: how close do you want to be to the sardines, the restaurants and the bars? Here's what to look for.

4-bed dorm with two bunks

Moalboal is on the southwest coast of Cebu. For most travellers, the best base is Panagsama, the area around Panagsama Beach: the famous sardine run is just off the beach, and restaurants and bars are a short walk away. Staying here means you can walk to almost everything and save your transport budget for the day trips.

Why stay in Panagsama

  • The sardine run on your doorstep. Huge schools of sardines live just off Panagsama Beach, close enough to swim to from the shore, all year round.
  • Restaurants and bars within walking distance, so evenings don’t need any planning.
  • A good starting point for day trips. Kawasan Falls (in Badian, a little south) and Oslob (on the southeast coast) are both reachable on organised day trips, and many hostels and hotels can arrange them for you.

What to look for in a place to stay

Moalboal has accommodation for every budget. Whatever you choose, these things make a real difference in a hot, salty, outdoorsy place:

  1. Air-con. Nights can be warm; a cool room means better sleep before an early start.
  2. Somewhere to rinse off. After the reef or the river you’ll want a good shower, and lots of it.
  3. Secure storage. You’ll leave valuables behind on canyoneering and snorkeling days, so look for lockers.
  4. Luggage storage. Handy if you arrive before check-in or leave after check-out.
  5. Help with trips and transfers. A reception that arranges canyoneering, whale sharks and transfers saves you a lot of messaging.
  6. The right social level. Some travellers want events every night; others want a quiet room. The best places offer both.

Dorm or private room?

  • Dorms are the easiest way to meet people and the best value. If you’re a light sleeper, a smaller dorm (four beds instead of ten) is usually calmer.
  • Private rooms give you your own space and a double bed, while still letting you join the social side when you want.
  • Check the bathroom details for private rooms: “private” doesn’t always mean en-suite.

Staying at Wild Monkeys Hostel

We’re a boutique hostel on Panagsama Road, with the idea of hotel comfort with hostel soul: higher standards of cleanliness and comfort than a typical hostel, with the social side of hostel life.

  • Rooms: a mixed 10-bed dorm, a quieter mixed 4-bed dorm and a Private Deluxe with a double bed. The Private Deluxe has its own private bathroom just outside the bedroom door, behind its own lockable door, used only by that room’s guests.
  • Every room has air-con, and towels are included. Every bunk has an international power outlet (adaptors available) plus USB and USB-C charging, and two pillows per bed.
  • Open-air showers in the shared bathrooms: our signature, and guests mention them in review after review.
  • Free lockers in a keypad-secured locker room, free luggage storage and a free water refill station.
  • An in-house coffee shop and bar, and regular events like beer pong, karaoke, trivia and boodle fight nights.
  • Reception arranges Kawasan canyoneering, Oslob whale sharks, the sardine run, motorbike and snorkel rental, laundry, and private transfers.

In our guests’ words: “The best hostel in Moalboal.” (KuTiNA, South Korea, on Agoda, translated). Read more reviews.
