Moalboal rewards a slower pace: the sardine run is right off the beach, and the bigger day trips start from your door. This plan assumes you stay in Panagsama, where restaurants, bars and the sardine run are a short walk away. Swap the days around to fit the weather and your energy.
Before you go: getting to Moalboal
Most travellers arrive at Mactan-Cebu Airport. The drive to Moalboal takes roughly 3–4 hours, depending on traffic.
- Easiest: a private transfer from arrivals straight to the hostel. See Cebu Airport to Moalboal transfer.
- Cheapest: taxi or Grab to the Cebu South Bus Terminal, a southbound bus to Moalboal (roughly 3–4 hours), then a tricycle to Panagsama (about 10 minutes). Our airport guide explains every step.
Arriving before check-in? Leave your bags at the hostel for free and head for the water.
Day 1: arrive and meet the sardines
- Morning or afternoon: arrive, check in and settle in.
- Snorkel the sardine run. The sardines live just off Panagsama Beach, close enough to swim to from the shore. Rent a mask and snorkel at reception and ask us where to get in that day. Sea turtles are often seen too; keep your distance and don’t touch any marine life.
- Evening: rinse off in the open-air showers, then a craft beer at the bar. Ask what’s on: beer pong, karaoke, trivia, game nights or a boodle fight.
Tip: the water is usually calmest in the morning, so if Day 1 is a late arrival, do the sardines first thing on Day 2.
Day 2: Kawasan Falls canyoneering
Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls in Badian, a little south of Moalboal, takes a good part of the day. Tours usually start upriver and follow the canyon down to the falls, with swimming, sliding and optional cliff jumps. Helmets and life vests are standard.
- Book through reception: we arrange transport, a guide and the gear.
- Bring swimwear, shoes that can get wet and a dry change of clothes.
- Leave valuables in your free locker at the hostel.
See Kawasan Falls canyoneering. In the evening, take it easy: you’ll have earned it.
Day 3: whale sharks in Oslob, or a slow day
Option A: Oslob whale sharks. Oslob, on the southeast coast of Cebu, is known for early-morning whale shark watching. It’s a long drive from Moalboal, so trips start very early. Go to bed early on Day 2. See Oslob whale shark watching.
Option B: a slow day. Start with coffee or a breakfast smoothie bowl at our coffee shop, do a second sardine swim, or rent a motorbike and explore the coast at your own pace.
Moving on
From Moalboal it’s easy to continue south:
- Dumaguete: ferries leave from Liloan port in Santander, at the southern tip of Cebu. See Moalboal to Dumaguete transfer.
- Siquijor: the ferry leaves from Oslob. See Moalboal to Siquijor transfer.
- Back to Cebu: private transfers to Mactan-Cebu Airport, Cebu City and the seaport. See all transfers.
On your last day, luggage storage is free after check-out, so you can enjoy the morning before your transfer.
